
In Ryukyu Kempo the sparring techniques are practiced with full contact so that the full impact of the competitors blow can be experienced by both participants. the recipient as well as the deliverer. This type of kumite is called Bogu kumite. The purpose of practicing this form of Kumite is specifically to discourage students from the attitude that sparring is fun. There is an inherent risk of injury in this practice. However it is a vital experience for the student to feel the impact of a blow of this magnitude to be able to understand the importance of preventing it. This experience should remind the competitor that Karate training should be focused on the protection of oneself and not so much on the scoring of points.
Students under the age of 15 participate under a different set of rules due to nature of risk involved in the bogu kumite. All contact is directed to the chest protector only. This is practiced more for the sport of competition and should be not be considered as bogu kumite as the primary goal in this form of kumite is to score points. This program has many rules that are in fact designed to prevent injury and insure a safe environment for the young undeveloped student with the main focus on basic body movement and technical execution.
This form of competition involves the use of weaponry. Each competitor uses the Ryukyu kobudo weapon of his choice. There is usually only one point issued in each match. Full protective armor is worn. This form of competition is limited to the upper black belt levels only and has great inherent risk of injuries even with the most skilled practitioner.
